Last October, Montréal singer-songwriter Common Holly — aka Brigitte Naggar — came through Billboard‘s New York City office for a Stereogum session, covering Ozzy Osbourne’s “Back on Earth” for a special Halloween performance. She was also in an awesome hedgehog costume.
We’re happy to report she’s back to lending her elegant vocals to the holiday spirit, this time for a love-themed playlist for Amazon Music centered around Valentine’s Day. Here, we present Common Holly’s dazzling cover of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange heartbreaker, “Thinkin Bout You.” You know it, you love it — wait ’til you hear what she’s done with it.
Holly tells Billboard of her rendition:
When you’re asked to pick a love song to cover, the choosing process is not for the faint of heart I was on tour wracking my brain — KC & Jojo? Lana Del Rey? But the clear choice was hanging before me — Frank Ocean is the ultimate man of mystery. Between his raging falsetto and his incomprehensible metaphors he has found a friend in me, and I felt the only way to thank him for that was to do my best not to destroy one of his sweetest tracks.
Just when you’re getting used to the feathery acoustics and choral ah-ah-ahs of the opening verse, Naggar goes and changes everything up in the second, then ties it all together in the end. Sonically, it’s way different from the original, but at the same time, she sounds right at home working in Frank’s brainy, lovesick aura. Take a listen below:
The cover is part of Amazon’s Valentine’s-themed Love Me/Love Me Not playlist series, which will update Feb. 9, featuring “Thinkin Bout You” and a host of other covers.
