The character of Judas is one of the most controversial figures in scripture, known for the kiss and betrayal of Jesus Christ.
When casting this important figure in biblical history for Fox’s live network presentation of The Passion, musical director Adam Anders knew that American Idol alum Chris Daughtry was the man for the job.
A new clip released by Fox offers a sneak peek of the show with footage of Daughtry recording his vocals on Imagine Dragons‘ “Demons.” Daughtry and JenCarlos Canela, who portrays Jesus, will duet on the song. According to Anders, it will occur at the very moment Judas betrays Christ.
“Chris Daughtry was my first choice for Judas from day one,” Anders says in the clip. “I just couldn’t think of anybody better to sing that live.”
Daughtry — who said he was intrigued by the idea of how modern music would be incorporated into the story — said it is “fun to sing songs that you “respect and love.”
“That never really changes when you become a songwriter,” he said.
Anders said that Daughtry’s voice is tailored for the “Judas stuff.”
“He can really go for it,” he said. “You feel that bitterness and anger and those emotions you were expecting were happening with Judas.”
The Passion airs March 20 on Fox.
