On Friday (March 8), Cage the Elephant released the thrilling new song “House of Glass,” the second single from their forthcoming album Social Cues.
With angular notes and frontman Matt Shultz’s enticing vocals — which the frontman told Consequence of Sound he sang with a “soft-spoken murderer” in mind — the uptempo rock ‘n’ roll tune creeps into listeners’ minds with haunting lyrics to boot.
“Climb into my corner, my self-inflicted coma/ Stand up, lay down, repeat in the same order/ Fall straight through the floor and let the time just run me over/ Another mirrored image corrupted and distorted,” Shultz sings.
The Nashville-based band also released a lyric video, made by Lexington-based artist Robert Beatty, with ’70s-like neon visuals. In the lyric breakdown article for CoS, guitarist Brad Shultz explained the song’s origins.
“During the making of the record as a whole we were pretty obsessed with horror movies,” he said. “We wanted the song to have a horror film feel and John Carpenter has always been a favorite of ours. Fun fact, he is from Bowling Green, Kentucky, our home own, and actually dated our bass player’s mother when they were teenagers.”
Social Cues is due out on April 19 on RCA Records, and the band will then kick off a co-headlining tour with Beck on May 4.
