Take a bite out of your day like Matt Shultz takes a bite out of pineapples with the new Cage the Elephant single “Mess Around.” The four-piece rock band premiered the first single from upcoming album Tell Me I’m Pretty on Thursday (Oct. 29).
A tweet from the band’s page declares the new track as inspired by OutKast, but there’s definitely a Black Keys influence as well. The latter comes from Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach, who plays on the track and also has producing credits for the album.
The song runs parallel to the musical strides the band made in their previous album Melophobia. It features a full, rich rock sound with electric guitars and a solid beat. Shultz’s vocals wrap around the distorted guitars for the familiar feel the band’s fans have fallen in love with but a surf vibe and the aforementioned OutKast tendencies prove their sound hasn’t settled — in the best way.
The lyrics have matured and the band has mellowed from the aggressive angst of Thank You, Happy Birthday, but the boys haven’t stopped evolving. Their new album promises to honor their beginning while still exploring what’s out there.
