The Broken Bells are back with new single “Good Luck,” their first since standalone song “Shelter” last year. The duo, comprised of James Mercer of The Shins and producer Danger Mouse, dropped the song on Friday (Sept. 27).
With moody lyrics such as, “When I woke, I was there alone/ Where will it end?” and “Enter the gods and all the sacred signs/ At the end of your line,” the duo contemplate death and the end of the world over a grooving beat. The apocalyptic imagery bears a resemblance to songs like “Holding On For Life” from the duo’s 2014 album After The Disco, which peaked at no. 5 on the Billboard 200.
“Good Luck” is the duo’s first single from their upcoming third album, which does not yet have a release date. It will be their first collection of new songs in five years.
“Both of us are constantly working on music at any given time, yet we always drift back to one another as Broken Bells,” the duo said in a press release announcing the track. “When it happens naturally, it happens— and right now it’s happened in the form of writing and recording sessions for the third Broken Bells album.”
