You’re tuning in live to Doom or Destiny News, with anchors Joan Jett and Debbie Harry — or so that’s how the new video for Blondie‘s song “Doom or Destiny” featuring Jett begins. The Rob Roth-directed video premiered early this morning (Dec. 6) via VICE’s i-D.
Harry and Jett sit at a news desk as a harrowing headline occupies the screen: “Alarm Bells Ringing in Nation’s Head.” Harry presents stories of the day, including three women wearing full-body spandex suits with “NASTY” written across their chests, and a weather forecast projecting asteroids and nuclear war.
While very serious in subject matter, the video is also satirical in delivery — and very punk rock. Throughout the video, we see a snowman melting (a nod toward climate change) and an orange puppet with thought bubbles screaming “FAKE NEWS!!”
“Doom or Destiny” was released in May as part of Blondie’s album Pollinator. Watch the full video, which according to a press release was “inspired by the current political landscape and social turmoil across the globe,” below:
