While between albums themselves, Black Satellite decided to spend a little time with favorite songs from another band.
The New York duo has recorded covers of two Type O Negative songs — “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend,” whose video is premiering exclusively below, and “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” — to pay tribute to the group’s late founder Peter Steele on the eighth anniversary of his death (April 14) from an aortic aneurysm. “Last year I was reading a lot of press remembering Peter Steele seven years later and things like that,” Black Satellite’s Larissa Vale tells Billboard. “I was just so compelled to do a proper tribute. I was introduced to Type O Negative by a friend, and that music is just so captivating. I felt like I wanted to tip my hat to a great musician who came before us.”
“My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend” became an instant favorite for guitarist Kyle Hawken after Vale turned him on to Type O Negative. “I just fell in love with that song and have been following them ever since,” he says. “Every time I heard it I heard more high production — heavier guitars but still keeping the same dancey vibe. I think what we did stick pretty close to what they did. It’s a good mix of their song but also with our taste for heavier guitars.” Vale adds that, “I think that song really pushes the boundaries in a lot of different ways, especially lyrically. We just wanted to be fearless with it and also have some fun. The song is super dancey, a lot of neon lights type of feel. We wanted to create that fun atmosphere with it.”
The two videos will both start streaming on April 14. Black Satellite — which recently signed new management and has been talking to booking agents as well — has started working on a follow-up to 2017’s Endless but also hopes to play some shows this year. “We’re trying to work on getting on the right tour, maybe as an opening act for another band or something like that,” Vale says. “And we’re always writing, so the next album can definitely happen when all the balls are in place.”
