Billy Corgan announced Wednesday (Sept. 20) that he’s releasing a silent short film titled Pillbox, which will premiere next month in select theaters in London, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman’s upcoming solo album, Ogilala, will soundtrack the film.
A minute-long trailer shows the film’s striking aesthetic duality. Ostensibly set during World War I, the teaser opens with black-and-white footage of a soldier getting married before being whisked off to battle, where he charges enemy soldiers and dodges cannonball blasts. Midway through, the trailer shifts gears, with fantastical imagery of bejeweled kings and face-painted warriors. A child removes the soldier’s blindfold and he stumbles, arms outstretched, toward a magnificent, all-encompassing sun.
Corgan co-directed Pillbox with Linda Strawberry.
