Indie rockers Bill Callahan and Bonnie “Prince” Billy have served up another one of their quirky covers, this time putting a bouncy spin on Billie Eilish‘s “Wish You Were Gay” with help from the High Llamas’ Sean O’Hagan.
The latest in the duo’s series of offbeat takes finds the pair transforming the track from Eilish’s Grammy-winning When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? album into a bubbling disco folk tune.
Melding their yearning voices over finger-picked acoustic guitar, AutoTuned vocalizations and burbling synths the trio transform Eilish’s brooding, whispered jazzy original into the perfect soundtrack to a dance party for one.
Callahan and Billy (aka Will Oldham) have spent the past month releasing unexpected covers, including Hank Williams Jr.’s “O’D’d in Denver” and Cat Stevens’ “Blackness of the Night.”
