Now that CMJ Music Marathon 2015 is over, it’s time to look past the overloaded lineups and cultural ephemera and focus on something with some staying power. In this case, it’s a band that hustled CMJ 2014, paid its dues, hit the studio, and is now less than a month away from releasing its debut LP.
It’s Toronto-based buzzsaws the Beverleys, and the track is a four-minute dust devil of grungy guitars, low key hooks, and tension. It’s a new track called “Spaced” and we’re excited to premiere it on Billboard:
Frontwoman Susan Burke takes Billboard through the barrage of manic emotional energy that inspired the song. It’s best to read her explanation along with the song, even if we can’t promise you’ll feel any relief when it’s all over:
“Spaced” is about the frustration you feel at the over-and-over-again whirlwind of disappointed expectations and the impossibility of communication. You’re always on your own side, the other side, there’s me and there’s you and they can never be switched, and our fantasy of love gets rocked off its axis because they were two different beings’ impressions and feelings and sides, and you can’t reach the other side because meaning is filtered, and you want to believe in the possibility of love or whatever but now I feel fucking mental and I’m checking out (cue disassociated bridge). And then you come back to normal a little, and you think, well, how can I make sure this doesn’t hurt, what can I do? Oh yeah, I can be a nihilist.
Nihilism aside, the Beverleys did believe in crafting a killer debut LP, and on Nov. 6, Brutal will drop on Buzz Records (that’s the cover art up above). It was produced by Shehzaad Jiwani of Greys and Josh Korody, who has worked on music for fellow Torontonians Dilly Dally and Fucked Up.
