The world paid tribute to beloved SpongeBob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg this week after the animator died at age 57 following a long fight against ALS. Among those honoring Hillenburg was Beck, who shared a loving Facebook post describing his relationship with the man who was not only his former neighbor, but also one of his earliest collaborators.
“Very sad to hear the news of the passing of Stephen Hillenberg, who years and years ago used to be my neighbor and kindly did the artwork for the first music that I ever released,” Beck wrote along with an image of Hillenburg’s crude image for the singer’s 1993 “MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack” single.
“I always remembered him as a genuinely sweet guy,” the singer said, also including a picture of Hillenburg’s old apartment. “I was lucky to get to run into him by chance at the airport a few months ago. Sending my condolences to his family and to all the friends who are missing him today and thinking about old times.”
