Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
With airy guitars and a rustic tone, Barns Courtney makes the perfect kind of music for a walk in the park. Fittingly, the British singer-songwriter loves strolling around whatever city he’s visiting, particularly at night to stargaze. So as he made his Takeover Tuesday playlist, Courtney had his fellow nighttime lovers in mind, whom he calls “Moon Drifters.”
“I listen to these tunes when I’m wandering the city late at night,” Courtney says in a statement. “Whimsical, wistful songs for moonlight lovers and starry eyed dreamers.”
Courtney shouts out several ambient pop artists in his 13-song playlist, including Billie Eilish, Cigarettes After Sex and The Libertines. He also adds some ethereal instrumental tracks to the mix, such as Alex Kozobolis’ “I Promise,” dné’s “Asos Model Crush” and Masakatsu Takagi’s “Oyoste Aina.”
Some of the titles are even night-inspired, like Beach House’s “Space Song,” Sophie Hutchings’ “By Night,” and even a track by Audrey Hepburn, “Moon River” from the iconic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Courtney is currenly on tour with The Kooks, then will be joining Elle King for her North American trek — so you may catch him jamming to these tunes in a city near you.
