Musician Michael Joseph Nelson — who performs under the moniker of Banners — released his self-titled debut EP back in January. Now, almost a year later, he and his haunting falsetto are back with a new track titled “Holy Ground.”
The Liverpool native — who grew up inspired by the likes of Jeff Buckley and Arcade Fire — fuses melodious and delicate vocals with textured production. Following the release of his EP, Banners performed his breakout single “Shine A Light” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
His new song, though, which is being shared exclusively with Billboard, diverges from the surging, up-tempo and, well, brighter sound of “Shine A Light.” Rather, on “Holy Ground,” Banners sings with an angelic lilt, while the song floats on at a slow and slumbering pace, as if within a dream.
“This is a song about special people and special places,” Banners tells Billboard. “And keeping those memories with you wherever you go.”
