While recording an upcoming Loudwire podcast, Bad Brains frontman H.R. (Paul Hudson) revealed some startling news: He will undergo brain surgery this month. The surgery will hopefully improve a neurobiological disorder called SUNCT (or “Suicide Syndrome”) that causes severe cluster headaches.
The headaches have been ongoing for some time, and in March of 2016 H.R.’s wife Lori even helped set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for treatment. H.R.’s caregiver told Loudwire, that his headaches are often and unannounced, though they increase in severity at night.
“The intensity of the nighttime headaches is so great that he yells, cries out, groans, and sobs — repeatedly, every few minutes, for most of the night,” the caregiver said. “He can’t work. He has no quality of life. If you call him and ask how he is, he will say, ‘Everything’s okay,’ because that’s just how he is. But everything is not okay.”
H.R. said that to manage the pain up until now, he has been consuming a “cocktail of pharmaceuticals” along with more natural remedies like wheatgrass and Vitamin A, D, and C. Due to the severity of the disorder, he has qualified for brain surgery and it will finally take place on Feb. 21.
