Azure Ray is back. The dream pop duo comprised of Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink is set to release its first music since 2012 with its new Waves EP, due Oct. 26. Its lead track arrives below with a cheekily irreverent music video.
In the new clip, Taylor and Fink, clad in white dresses, perform the emotional indie tune “Palindrome” by a candlelit piano. The video then abruptly cuts to footage of the duo with director Alan Tanner, as they discuss the set design and wonder why there are no “exotic birds or jewels.” Alternating between these two shots, “Palindrome” is cleverly self-reflexive in an industry where over-the-top music videos reign supreme.
“We decided to do something a little different for our first video premiere after a six-year hiatus,” Azure Ray tells Billboard of their “atypical approach to video-making.”
The duo first formed in Athens, Ga., in 2001 and soon joined the Saddle Creek Records music scene in Omaha, Neb., which included the likes of Bright Eyes and The Faint. Between 2001 and 2010, Azure Ray released four LPs, the latter two with Saddle Creek.
The tandem took a hiatus after 2012’s EP, As Above, So Below, and the two women pursued solo endeavors. They reunited a few months ago, after the chance arrival of a box full of Azure Ray footage made them reflect on their career together.
“Inside were the original reels from the first record,” Azure Ray says. “Something about seeing the giant, antiquated, gray metal boxes made us nostalgic for those early recordings.”
Waves is set for release on Oct. 26, through Taylor’s own record label, Flower Moon Records. It’s available for pre-order here.
