As one of the headliners for the Saturday (June 23) portion of Hellfest 2018, metal band Avenged Sevenfold made sure to start things off with a moving tribute honoring former Pantera drummer, Vinnie Paul, who passed away in his sleep in his Las Vegas home on Friday (June 22).
The band also shared a touching Facebook post highlighting their first meeting. “You were warm and engaging. Our friendship lasted for many years and eventually resulted in a killer rendition of ‘Mouth for War’ at the Revolver Golden Gods, a career highlight,” the band wrote. “Vegas will never be the same without you. Dallas will never be the same. Metal will never be the same. We have been lucky enough to meet some of our idols and call them friends. You were one of the greatest of all time and a great friend. Today we mourn.”
A slideshow of Paul was projected onto the Hellfest screens during the set, and the band dedicated their performance of “Hail to the King” to the late drummer.
