The Arctic Monkeys, Wolf Alice, Everything Everything, King Krule, Noel Gallagher, Lily Allen, Florence + the Machine and Jorja Smith are among the artists shortlisted for the 2018 Hyundai Mercury Prize. The nominations were announced on Thursday morning (July 26) for the annual event which recognizes the Best British album of the past year. The nominees are chosen by a panel of British music critics and industry figures.
“This year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize celebrates albums by musicians at all stages of their careers, but with a shared belief in the importance of music for navigating life’s challenges – whether personal or political, falling in or out of love, growing up or looking back, angry or ecstatic. The music here is funny and inspiring, smart and moving,” the judges said of the nominations, which also include nods for Everything is Recorded, Nadine Shah, Novelist and Sons of Kemet.
According to the Guardian, the nod for the Monkeys’ sixth album, Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, makes them the second most-nominated act in the prize’s 26-year history, tying them with PJ Harvey and putting them just one back from Radiohead. It also marks the first nomination for Gallagher for his Who Built the Moon? album, following two nods for Oasis back in the mid-1990s.
The 2018 awards will be handed out on Sept. 20 at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, England.
