In this week’s episode of “You Should Know,” Billboard is getting to know Zhavia Ward, the singer who rose to fame on The Four and sang alongside Zayn Malik for the new cover of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World.”
Asked who her biggest musical inspirations are, Zhavia names Post Malone and Drake, adding that really anything hip-hop or R&B has inspired her. She also says Post Malone would be a dream collaboration of hers, along with Young Thug and Roddy Ricch.
Speaking of her decision to participate in the reality TV singing competition show The Four, Zhavia admits that she wasn’t originally planning to audition for it, but the show’s producers wanted her to go on it, and she changed her mind when she found out that the panel was going to be more urban.
She next reveals how she ended up working with Zayn on the Aladdin cover song, explaining that her manager received an email from Zayn’s manager asking if she would like to sing the female vocals on “A Whole New World.”
“At first we thought it was a spam email, because it was just so random and it’s a huge opportunity,” Zhavia admits with a laugh. “But when I found out it was legit, I was really shocked and grateful. He’s an amazing artist and I feel so honored to be chosen.”
In the interview, Zhavia also opens up about what inspired her new EP 17, explaining that it was influenced by her life, particularly by the experiences she has had within the past two years after getting exposure from being on the show.
“Just my journey and how I got to where I am right now,” she says. “Some of the struggles I went through. And I also have some love songs on there.”
