Prominent hip-hop producer Zaytoven took to NPR’s famously small desk for what was supposed to be a set with longtime collaborator Future, but turned into an instrumental showcase of their collaborations after the Atlanta rapper couldn’t make it last minute.
NPR explained that the impromptu performance — published on Feb. 28 — took place back in January after Future dropped his latest album, The Wzrd. Although the trap-star was a no-show for undisclosed reasons, fellow Atlanta native (born Xavier Lamar Dotson) didn’t leave without showcasing a captivating instrumental version of some of their popular bass-heavy collaborations, including “Lay Up” and “Peacoat.”
With the help of Neil Garrard on guitar, Bernard “TreWay” Lambert on drums, DJ Spinz and Elena Pinderhughes on flute, the musicians began the 11-minute set with Future’s “Mask Off.” Zaytoven then capped off the show with “Mo Reala,” which also features Future, from his 2018 album Trap Holizay.
