Rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again was among 16 people who were arrested on drug and firearms charges in Baton Rouge, La., on Monday (Sept. 28), according to local CBS affiliate WAFB. The 20-year-old rapper born Kentrell Gaulden is facing a variety of drug, felony possession and stolen firearm charges, per the report, which cites police.
A press release from law enforcement noted that “concerned citizens” alerted police and FBI that there were people “brandishing guns” around 4:30 p.m. Monday, and that some individuals fled when officers arrived on the scene. Gaulden was among those arrested. Drugs, 14 guns, and $79,000 were confiscated.
According to the Baton Rouge Sheriff Office’s website, the artist was charged with possession of a schedule 1 drug, as well as distributing and manufacturing of schedule 2 and 4 drugs. There were no mentions of firearms charges. He was booked on Tuesday, and no release date is listed.
“Kentrell Gaulden is innocent of the crimes he was arrested for yesterday evening. He did not possess any firearms nor did he possess any controlled dangerous substances,” his attorney James Manasseh tells Billboard. According to Masseneh, law enforcement officials arrived after receiving a tip that guns were present, and allegedly without evidence that there had been a crime. “No firearms or controlled dangerous substances were found on Mr. Gaulden’s person or in his immediate control.”
He added, “Mr. Gaulden is innocent of the charges he was booked on last night and looks forward to defending himself as such.”
The MC also had a few run-ins with the law last year, including an arrest in February in Atlanta on a disorderly conduct charge and the arrest of his associate Trulondrick Norman in June on a second degree murder charge from a 2016 non-fatal drive-by shooting in Louisiana.
Billboard has reached out to YoungBoy’s rep, as well as the Baton Rouge police department.
The rapper celebrated his third No. 1 debut in a row on the Billboard 200 earlier this summer when Top hit the apex on the heels of the AI YoungBoy 2 mixtape last October and April 2019’s 38 Baby 2 tape.
