UPDATE: A spokeswoman for San Diego State University confirms to Billboard that YG performed “F— Donald Trump” at Friday’s show, but despite reports to the contrary about his contract, the spokeswoman says the rapper was paid for his performance.
Over the weekend, YG reportedly broke his contract with San Diego State University when he performed his inflammatory single “F–k Donald Trump.”
On Friday (March 3), YG headlined the university’s Greenfest concert. His contract, reportedly worth $60,000, also stated that the Still Brazy rapper would not perform “FDT,” according to Complex. Billboard reached out to YG’s rep and San Diego State University for comment.
While YG performed the anti-Trump anthem onstage, students tweeted about his performance and applauded his decision. “Shout out to @YG for playing FDT even though it means he won’t get paid. Not just bc it’s a good song but it’s relevant and important,” said one university-goer. “I have so much respect for @YG now. Bro really didn’t care that my school didn’t want him to rap FDT,” tweeted another.
Since the release of “FDT” in March 2016, the song has triggered a good deal of controversy. Trump supporters have blasted the record for its negativity towards the newly-named president. Last year, YG’s video shoot for “FDT” was derailed after police immediately shut it down.
Check out footage at San Diego University from his performance below.
