Yasiin Bey — the artist formerly known as Mos Def — is going to gut-wrenching measures to raise awareness of the controversial treatment of prisoners in the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
In the video above, directed by Asif Kapadia and released by the activist group Reprieve, Bey undergoes the same force-feeding procedure detainees face in Guantanamo. According to the video, there are over 100 individuals in the detention center who choose to protest its conditions by refusing to eat. More than 40 of them are being force-fed, which, according to the video, occurs twice daily and takes two hours to complete each time.
Many of the detainees celebrate the Islamic holiday of Ramadan (which begins today), where observers traditionally eat only after sundown. Under pressure from Islamic community leaders, the US government has said it will respect the daylight fast and only force-feed observers at night.
The controversial detention camp was opened in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in 2002 by president George W. Bush’s administration to house suspects in America’s war on terror.
