South Korean rapper-producer duo XXX released their new album Second Language today (Feb. 15).
The 10-track LP follows the group’s November release of Language as an impactful work that is meant to be seen as “statement of sonic dissonance from mainstream Korean music.”
The group’s sophomore album is built around bilingual rapper Kim Ximya’s vitriolic flow, as he expresses discontent with society and the mainstream Korean music industry over producer FRNK’s discordant beats and atmospheric melodies.
Second Language is fronted by the frenetic pounding of “Language,” which exemplifies the album’s title with the distorted repetition of the phrase, “We do not speak the same language.”
The album was released in collaboration with an exhibit of the same name opening at the One and J. Gallery in Seoul, where the Second Language tracks were reimagined as customized pieces of furniture by Kwangho Lee in an attempt to blend the boundaries of artistic experiences.
The duo is set to perform at the 2019 Korea Spotlight event at SXSW on March 13.
