Billboard is premiering an exclusive clip on Tuesday (April 16) from episode 3 of Wiz Khalifa‘s Behind The Cam docuseries, featuring Wiz, collaborators, friends, and family reminiscing on the rise of “Black and Yellow.”
Khalifa’s global anthem — which ended up being nominated for best rap song and best rap performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards — shook up the hip-hop landscape upon its release in 2010. The smash hit would put Khalifa officially on the mainstream map, and eventually notch him his first No. 1 record on the Billboard Hot 100. “That’s what established me, numberswise, fanwise — that was like my introduction to the world,” he says.
The Pittsburgh native credits the grind he put in years prior that helped make his transition to superstardom a smooth one. “I did a lot of things when they’re on the grind and trying to make a name for themselves,” Wiz explains. “Just through that, I had built a crazy-ass fan base. When I did ‘Black and Yellow,’ I already knew the game and how to make my way.”
The five-part Wiz Khalifa: Behind The Cam series releases in full on April 17 over at Apple Music. Khalifa also will be celebrating 4/20 in style by blessing fans with the Fly Times Vol. 1: The Good Fly Young this weekend.
