After hyping today’s date over the past week on Twitter, Willow Smith just released a surprise album called Ardipithecus on Roc Nation. The project is her debut full-length release, following a string of singles and EPs that started with the now 15-year-old’s 2011 smash hit “Whip My Hair.”
The majority of the album was written and produced by Willow on her own, though her older brother Trey Smith (who appears as AcE) and JABS also appear in the credits. “Ardipithecus Ramidus is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth,” Smith told The Fader in a statement. “I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state. Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs.”
