Wasiu’s pen is sharper than ever. For the Montreal rapper’s new track, “Tabula Rasa,” he recruits the highly sought-after producer, Kaytranada, to provide the spacey soundscape.
On “Tabula Rasa,” Wasiu’s steely bars and in-pocket delivery serves as highlights on the vintage boom-bap track. “I’m shadow boxing with my enemy/ I may weather the storm, but drain my energy,” he brilliantly raps.
“Everything about this song is vintage. Not only does the beat sound vintage, but this is vintage Kaytranada production,” Wasiu tells Billboard. “He doesn’t make this style of beats anymore.. He’s evolved past that. This is the first beat i got from him, back when his producer name was Kaytradamus.”
While Wasiu relishes the fact that he received a throwback beat from Kay, he’s also ecstatic about being able to fully commit to his rap career. “This is also, vintage Wasiu… I wrote this song during a time period of when I was finishing up my Psychology degree, unsure of if I wanted to be a rapper,” he says. “There was always this internal conflict, with doubts that I could make it. It’s one of the first songs I ever made.”
