The old school vs new school rap divide is no new phenomenon: Last week, the internet was lit aflame when an interview between Lil Yachty and Joe Budden on Complex‘s “Everyday Struggle” surfaced where veteran rapper Joe Budden attempted to school Lil Yatchy about the industry and hip-hop. Over the weekend, Lil Uzi Vert was the latest new school rhymer to receive backlash, this time from Waka Flocka, who expressed his opinions about the Philly native.
Waka Flocka commented on an image of Lil Uzi Vert (clad in a striped, ripped t-shirt) with “Your Hip Hop” above Uzi’s head, alongside an image of Queens rapper Nas that read “My Hip Hop,” saying of the photo: “This post ain’t bool @liluzivert is Rock not Hip Hop”. He went on to list rappers Logic, Meek Mill, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar saying “let my era be great!!!” before ending the post with the hashtag “#ImJustTakingUpForHipHop.
The self-proclaimed “rockstar” (see: his guest appearance on Playboi Carti’s “wokeuplikethis*”) may not be a preferred hip-hop pick of the genre’s veterans, but Uzi has had his fair share of hits on the hip-hop charts — including his “XO TOUR Llif3,” which sits at No. 6 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs on the chart dated May 20.
