Continuing his press tour for his forthcoming album The Big Fish Theory, Vince Staples broke down the meaning of the title on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Wednesday night (June 1.
“It depends. One thing I look at music as something that’s digestible for the people that, you know, want to partake in it,” he explained. “But as far as with my music, I don’t want to ever tell somebody exactly what it’s about, because it’s whatever it means to them. So that’s up to the listener to decide.”
The Long Beach rapper also delved into actual fish, sparked by him giving beta fish to attendees at his listening party. According to Staples, the life span of a beta fish is allegedly two weeks. “You have to teach your children about loss,” he said.
When asked about his recent “Afro-futurism” comment about his album, Staples said, “I like saying stuff about black people to white people.” “So that doesn’t mean anything?” Noah asked, after letting out a hearty laugh, to which Staples replied, “Of course not.”
