Vic Mensa reportedly criticized XXXTentacion and his alleged domestic abuse during a cypher at the taping of the 2018 BET Hip-Hop Awards with X’s mother in the crowd, and came under fire for it on Sunday (Oct. 7). The Chicago rapper then posted a video Monday evening (Oct. 8) standing by his words.
The 25-year-old says that he recorded the freestyle “weeks ago” and was unaware that XXXTentacion’s mom, Cleopatra Bernard, would be at the event to accept her son’s award for best new artist.
“Recently I did a freestyle for the BET Awards cypher addressing and condemning rappers who unabashedly abuse women and those who stand up for them and even call them legends. I stand by those statements,” he calmly states in the video. “I vehemently reject the trend in hip-hop of championing abusers and I will not hold my tongue about it. I don’t give a fuck about getting attention. I care about bringing awareness and holding people accountable for their actions.”
“Protect women. Domestic & sexual abuse are not excusable because you have talent or you are troubled. With that said I was not aware his mother would be in attendance & I offer her my deepest condolences,” Mensa also captioned the post.
Footage of what exactly Mensa said at the taping is yet to surface; tthe previously-recorded BET Hip Hop Awards will air in full on Oct. 16.
