In this week’s episode of “How It Went Down,” Billboard caught up with Tyga to find out the story behind his song “Taste,” how Offset joined the project and which fellow rapper called the song’s visuals the “best video of all time.”
Tyga tells Billboard that “Taste” was the second or third song he created in one night and that it came to life following a nightclub break he took in between recording. Upon returning to the studio – along with “a bunch of girls and homies” – Tyga heard a “real slow” beat that producer D.A. Doman was playing.
The rapper sped up the beat then began freestyling over it, he explains, adding, “I always like to record the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear something so I came up with like the first four bars…I did the song in probably 30 minutes. Some beats just bring out that spirit in you and it was just a cake walk.”
Tyga also chats about the song’s music video, explaining that once they shot it, he knew it “felt right.”
“We dropped it the first day and all the reactions, like it was crazy,” he continues. “It got like, I don’t know…a million views like the first day, something crazy…Kanye hit me up and he was like, ‘Man, this is the best video of all time.’”
“That was cool that he checked the video out [as] soon as it came out,” Tyga adds, “And he was like on it, like one of the first people on it so, that was dope.”
In the video, which you can watch above, you can learn even more about how Tyga created “Taste,” including how he got Offset involved in the project and how they ended up filming together at a skating rink in Atlanta.
