Toledo, Ohio MC tshawntrusst had never heard of Fool’s Gold or A-Trak — but the label that launched the careers of Kid Cudi, Danny Brown and the legendary hip-hop producer at its helm had heard of him. The 19-year-old was discovered by A-Trak himself, and is now premiering “I’m That N***a,” his first video for the label, exclusively via Billboard.
“I’ve never made a music video, and I’ve never been to Chicago, so to be given this opportunity was so A1,” tshawntrusst tells Billboard. “I didn’t know what to do on camera at first but after a while I got more comfortable with the camera and the atmosphere and it was all GUCCI.” The video keeps it simple, adhering to the song’s focus — just him and his girl.
The single, produced by Chris McClenney (of Soulection) and Rvdical The Kid (Flow-Fi), showcases tshawntrusst’s singing voice as much as it does his flow. “Originally, I wanted to really rap on it, like, corny punchlines and all, but after a while I found myself writing this story about a girl, some girl, any girl, ” he says.
Polished and more than a little danceable, “I’m That N***a” is the first release off tshawntrusst’s upcoming mixtape debut for Fool’s Gold — cop it on iTunes here.
