Update: Scott’s lawyers responded to Tommy Lee’s claims with the following statement sent over to Billboard: “Tommy didn’t invent the concept of a roller coaster on stage and there’s no legal basis for his accusatory outburst. The actual creator and owner of the system has granted Travis all rights to use that equipment to complement his original stage design.”
Travis Scott‘s Astroworld Tour has already been on the road for three weeks, but drummer Tommy Lee must’ve just gotten wind of La Flame’s carnival-themed stage design. The Motley Crüe band member is threatening to take legal action against Scott, after seeing similarities to his 360-degree mechanical loop.
Lee played the drums on The Final Tour in a device he calls The Crüecifly, which resembles the 26-year-old’s looped machine. “Just found out this fucking idiot @travisscott or someone on his team ripped off the 360 AND The Crüecifly! WTF!! Get an original idea bro,” he wrote.
The 56-year-old continued to question Scott’s inspiration in a series of social media posts, where he would call on public opinion to raise awareness for his claims and even hint at a potential lawsuit. “ANNNNND not one rip off but TWO. DOPE. I get copying is a form of flattery, but this is just straight ripping off my shit. What do you guys think,” Lee continued. He added on Twitter: “Hey @trvisXX lawyer up!”
According to TMZ, the Methods of Mayhem founder was actually sued over his 360-degree drum contraption in 2014, but the courts ended up giving him a favorable ruling, finding his drum set to be an original work. Complex also points out that Travis Barker played the drums in something similar for Blink-182 back in the early 2000s.
Billboard reached out to Scott’s reps for comment. Check out Lee’s posts calling out Travis Scott below.
