The Weeknd returned to his dark side with the surprise release of his EP My Dear Melancholy, which featured lyrics that pointed to his highly publicized relationships with Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid. In a new interview with Time magazine, The Weeknd revealed we almost received an entirely different album.
When writer Kara Brown tried to get The Weeknd to open up about his past relationships, The Weeknd responded, “I don’t want to open that Pandora’s box, talking about relationships,” adding that recording My Dear Melancholy was “therapeutic” because “You want to get it out. It’s like you close a chapter.”
However, if he and Gomez remained a couple, My Dear Melancholy wouldn’t exist because he created an entire project that reflected how he felt during their relationship.
“Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done,” the singer said. “Which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life.” He revealed the project was “very upbeat” and “beautiful” but he didn’t “want to perform something that I don’t feel.”
The Weeknd told Brown that he’s single, but his relationship status may change soon as paparazzi caught him and Bella Hadid cozying up during the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
