Hip-hop is starting to heat up as the summer approaches. There were many quality releases this week from veterans and newcomers alike. Foremost, Drake expands on the sentiment expressed at the end of “Started from the Bottom” (new friends versus real friends) on the James Fauntleroy-assisted, “Girls Love Beyonce” and DJ Khaled’s “No New Friends.” “No new friends” is quickly becoming a catchphrase for loyalty thanks to these two records.
Fantasia releases the hard-hitting “Without Me,” featuring Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliot, in preparation for her new album “Side Effects of You” (April 23). Though the album’s lead single “Lose to Win” is performing well on the Adult R&B airplay chart (No. 7 peak), the North Carolina singer hasn’t charted on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs since “Collard Greens and Cornbread” peaked at No. 47 in 2011. Could “Without Me” bring Fantasia back on the chart?
