Jeremih moves discreetly. Within the four years between his sophomore album All About You and his upcoming album, Late Nights: The Album (due out Sept. 30), the singer-songwriter/producer has been working steadily, releasing his Late Nights with Jeremih mixtape and his collaborative project with Shlohmo, No More.
Jeremih stopped through the NYC Billboard office on Thursday, July 31, to play four to five songs off Late Nights and sit down with myself and co-host, Meaghan Garvey (Pitchfork, Fader), for this week’s episode of The Juice Podcast.
He ran through a few tracks and collaborations featured on the album, such as “Planes” which features J. Cole talking dirty, and “Paradise,” which Jeremih called “the hood ballad of the year.”
Besides J. Cole, Late Nights will also feature Trey Songz, Fabolous, Ty Dolla $ign, YG (“Don’t Tell ‘Em”), Juicy J “and even Flo Rida.” He continued to share about his studio sessions with DJ Mustard, Chance the Rapper (who appeared on No More) and Ty Dolla $ign.
His first Late Nights single, “Don’t Tell ‘Em,” is at its highest peak yet this week on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, rising from No. 14 to No. 11. It also climbs from No. 8 to No. 7 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. It had its best-selling week for digital downloads of the track this week, also, selling 39,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Jeremih shared that he was motivated to record the hit after seeing the success of Kid Ink‘s “Show Me,” which he co-wrote and had originally appeared on. “When I was creating ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em,’ I was feeling a way because I was a part of the ‘Show Me’ record, with Kid Ink and Chris Brown, as far as from the writing side,” he said. “I was actually on that song before Chris. Nobody really knows this: The day I wrote ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em’ was the day ‘Show Me’ went No. 1. It was like, ‘Man, can you believe the song that I helped on and that I was on, went No. 1?’ I was like, let me make my own…”
Before dropping Late Nights, Jeremih plans to release a mixtape, Not On My Album (N.O.M.A.), on August 4. It’ll feature seven tracks that didn’t make the Late Nights cut “and gives people what I do right now as an appetizer to Late Nights.”
Of course, our conversation with Jeremih wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t talk about the greatness that is his single, “Birthday Sex.”
