Everyone can agree that Aaliyah’s spirit is very much present and influential, 13 years after her passing.
Her debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number,” introduced an elusive, trendsetting girl turning into a woman in the midst of falling in love, in spite of anyone’s conviction.
In celebration of its 20-year anniversary, I dedicate a huge portion of the fourth episode to “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number.” This week’s guest, Jeff Sledge (former Jive A&R and founder of Pop Life Podcast), gives insight into the making of the late singer-songwriter’s debut album and her controversial relationship with R. Kelly.
Billboard’s Senior Correspondent Andrew Hampp joins me as co-host. We, including Sledge, close the podcast with a rundown of exclusive upcoming collaborations (Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland), new artists (Raury, Jordan Bratton, Tink) and new music that we’re excited about.
One of the songs we discuss, that I’m personally a fan of, is Nicki Minaj’s first “The Pink Print” single, “Pills N Potions.”
