SZA unveiled the sultry music video for her new Ty Dolla $ign-assisted single “Hit Different” on Thursday (Sept. 3), and Drake took note of it, giving the R&B star a shout-out on social media upon its release.
“Solana is the [chef’s] kiss,” Drizzy captioned a demure screenshot from the clip on his Instagram Stories.
Directed by the singer herself, the visual finds SZA joined by a bevy of back-up dancers, grooving and slinking her way through an auto junkyard as she recounts the highs and lows of an intoxicating relationship.
“I was into you from the beginning even if you wasn’t mine/ Scared to admit my shortcomings led to overdraft in this affair, declining/ Quicker than we started, evidence we misaligned/ Man, I get more in love with you each argument/ Somethin’ wrong with me, I like the way you screw your face up/ Trigger me right when I need it/ You wrong, but I can’t get along without you/ It’s a shame and I can’t blame myself, keep on lovin’ you/ You do it different,” she sings on the opening verse before ceding the floor to Ty Dolla $ign for much of the chorus.
“Hit Different” marks SZA’s first single as a lead artist since her 2017 debut album Ctrl (which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and spawned hits “Love Galore” and “Drew Barrymore”) and “All of the Stars,” her first Top 10 hit off Black Panther: The Album with Kendrick Lamar.
In the interim, the singer’s star has only continued to rise after collaborating with The Weeknd and Travis Scott on “Power is Power” from 2019’s For the Throne: Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones, as well as Justin Timberlake on “The Other Side,” the lead single from the Trolls World Tour soundtrack, earlier this year
