The Sugarhill Gang still got it. On Monday night’s Conan, the New York rap quartet nailed their performance of the 38-year-old classic “Rapper’s Delight” on the iconic Apollo Theater stage in Harlem, New York.
Original members Michael “Wonder Mike” Wright and Guy “Master Gee” O’Brien cruised through their verses on the funky cut, which first charted on the Hot 100 in 1979. Henry “Hen Dogg” Williams also subbed in for late co-founder Henry “Big Bank Hank” Jackson, remixing a few lines in Big Bank’s verse. The original, a 14-minute track which featured the crew dishing out rhymes on their riches and sex appeal, peaked at No. 36.
The Gang kicked off Conan’s week-long residency at the Apollo which will host other special guests Louis C.K., Ryan Reynolds, Rory Scovel and Tracy Morgan.
