In Billboard’s series “How It Went Down,” where artists tell the stories of how their hit songs came together while the tale comes to life around them in animation, Steve Aoki breaks down “one of the most interesting days of 2016” — which resulted his track “Night Call,” from latest album Kolony.
Recorded in Atlanta at Migos’ studio, Aoki recalls playing Quavo a beat that would eventually become “Night Call.” “In literally, I’d say like 30 minutes, he comes up with the hook that is ‘Night Call,'” he explains.
Even more crazy stuff happened during the recording process, including a wild Lil Yachty showing up at 2 a.m. with french fries before laying down his vocals on the track.
The true “secret” of this song, according to Aoki, is that it was recorded before the election and Quavo even gave a shout out to Bernie Sanders. That part had to be cut out though because, “It is what it is.”
