Snoop Dogg is about to play ball with AOL. The entertainer will direct and star in a reality sports video series created through a collaboration between his Snoopadelic Films company and the Internet giant.
Debuting online later this year, the eight short-form episodes will follow players and coaches participating in the Snoop Youth Football League as they travel across the country to compete against rival teams.
Snoop made the announcement Monday at AOL’s Future Front event at Pier 36 in New York which was attended by an estimated 2,500 professionals from the media and marketing industry.
“Mentoring kids through SYFL means more to me than anything else I do,” the rapper said. “It’s my way of continuing to connect with the communities that move me. I get to know kids and parents with great spirits from all over, and it becomes something far beyond football. It is important to not only be a football coach to these kids, but to be a life coach as well. It’s our way of sharing a life together. This series will finally give the world a chance to witness the stories, talent and commitment SYFL represents in the same way I do.”
Snoop’s SYFL has seen several players turn pro since its launch in 2005. The artist remains closely involved in coaching within the league, which serves low-income youth between the ages of five and 13.
The Doggfather is a pro when it comes to the business that is reality TV. He starred in Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, which ran from 2007-2009. And he had worked with Fox on developing a feature which focused on SYFL and was entitled Coach Snoop. The project ran into trouble when Natural Resources Media & Technology Group filed a broadcast rights lawsuit in 2007.
