In this week’s episode of “You Should Know,” Billboard sits down with rapper Smokepurpp to find out which artists most influenced his sound, what his best memory with Lil Pump has been, which music he listens to that might surprise people, and much more.
Smokepurpp, who was born in Chicago and grew up in Miami, tells Billboard that his biggest musical influences include Kanye West, Young Thug and Lucky, and that his favorite albums of all time are Kanye West’s Graduation, 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and his very own release Deadstar 1.
Asked what his best memory with his friend and fellow rapper Lil Pump has been, Smokepurpp recalls when they ditched school together to record music.
“We have too many memories. We grew up together,” he says. “I used to drive to high school and me and Pump would never go to school, I would just take the car, pick up Pump, and then we would go record. And then by the end of the school year, I got signed while I was in school. So the craziest thing I’ve ever done was skip school with Pump to make music and get here.”
When asked to describe the craziest thing he has ever done, Smokepurpp names another memory with Lil Pump, revealing that when he was barely 18 years old and Lil Pump was around 15, they were too young to get into strip clubs. “So we just made it rain outside the strip club,” he says. “And all the strippers came outside.”
In the interview, Smokepurpp also confesses that he would like to one day collaborate with Lil Nas X and that, although it may surprise some people, he enjoys listening to Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys.
