Prior to XXXTentacion‘s tragic passing last June, he was planning on signing a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter by the name of Skye as the first artist under his Bad Vibes Forver imprint. X took Skye under his wing and the pair developed a friendship after meeting while he was still on house arrest. Jahseh’s vision was executed on Thursday (Oct. 31) with the release of their collaborative track “Voices,” which flips Blink-182‘s “I Miss You,” via APG/Atlantic Records.
Skye also dropped an animated video to go alongside the song. The colorful clip finds the 19-year-old fighting the demons inside his head with a sharp croon that’s reminiscent of the late Lil Peep, which leads into rhymes showing glimpses of Lil Skies. XXXTentacion invades the track mid-way with a more uptempo and higher-pitched verse than usual.
“Jahseh and Skye developed a great bond working on music together in Florida,” X’s mother, Cleo Bernard explains of his son’s friendship with Skye. “Jah was in the process of signing Skye to his label Bad Vibes Forever. I’m grateful that Skye and his team were able to see ‘Voices’ through in honor of Jahseh’s vision for what he was looking to do on his own label.”
Skye attempted to soak up as much game as he could from X whenever he was around the “Sad!” rapper. “One of the main things that X always told me was that in regards to songwriting [is] ‘what is real, will prosper,'” he explains. “I made sure to channel that energy while writing and recording this record. It was actually a coincidence that we decided to flip a Blink-182 song called ‘I Miss You’ not knowing Jah’s fate at the time. This song serves as the perfect tribute to my bro who I miss dearly, and is in my thoughts every time I hear the track.”
