Killer Mike has been politically active lately, penning op-eds on the use of rap lyrics in trial and speaking about the grand jury verdict in the Ferguson case. Somehow he’s also found time to keep releasing videos for his rap duo with El-P, Run The Jewels. The latest, for “Oh My Darling (Don’t Cry),” just dropped. Check it out below.
The song rolls low and fast, with occasional interjections of “oh my” and strings of manipulated vocal samples. It’s streamlined and brutally efficient, a three-and-a-half-minute battering ram. “Oh My Darling (Don’t Cry)” is the second single from Run The Jewel’s recently released album, RTJ2.
In the video, El-P and Mike rap standing back-to-back, mostly in darkness. The visual equivalent of the vocal blips are the sudden bursts of color — shifting sets of neon patterns courtesy of director Timothy Saccenti. (Saccenti has also worked with Flying Lotus and Depeche Mode.) There are quick cuts from the two rappers to partially-obscured, barely-clothed bodies, as if Mike and El-P are rapping in the middle of a sex club. (One of El-P’s lines: “I do two things, I rap and f—.”)
