Are you currently going through life totally unaware of the fact that, in 2005, Rihanna was an up-and-comer who was chosen, along with Amerie and Teairra Marí, to perform a Destiny’s Child medley at the 2005 World Music Awards where Destiny’s Child was being honored?
Stay in the dark no longer. In honor of Throwback Thursday, we’re looking back at the clip, which really does have everything you could require for a brief nostalgia hit: Rihanna singing “Lose My Breath” (!), Beyonce with a perma-smile, doing her best to look like she doesn’t want to go up there and correct their dance moves, Michelle Williams openly weeping at Patti LaBelle, Usher crooning “Cater 2 U,” etc. It’s a time capsule all wrapped up in one quick awards show segment.
All that, plus Solange introduces Destiny’s Child, and the announcer actually refers to her as “Beyonce’s little sister.” That certainly doesn’t seem like a breeding ground for a complex!
And because now you’re invested, here’s Destiny’s Child’s actual performance from the event. The whole thing is great, but stay for 4:17 and ponder if there’s even been a better metaphor for their respective careers post-DC than their differing amounts of bracelets.
