At the core of the holiday drama, “Black Nativity,” is the music.
Raphael Saadiq was moved by director Kasi Lemmons’ interpretation of Langston Hughes’ play, and immediately got on board as executive music director.
“‘Black Nativity’ I was familiar with before the movie came to me because it was a huge playwright in the gospel community and since then so many different churches every year around christmas re-work this play,” Saadiq says. “I have a huge background in gospel. I started in church. Gospel was the root of everything for me. ‘Black Nativity’ gave me a lot of room to flex my gospel chops.”
