R. Kelly has already denied that he’s holding women captive and controlling every aspect of their lives in an alleged sex “cult,” but now he’s using Twitter to address the reports — in a rather cryptic way.
Sending a little #MorningMotivation to fans as he got his day started on Tuesday (July 18), the singer shared a picture that says “Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” Along with the phrase, Kelly captioned the image, “You have work to do and purpose to live. Make it count.”
While there was no mention of the allegations against him, the timing of Kelly’s message is peculiar, as the day before his post was the day the reports about him came out. According to a Buzzfeed article written by longtime music journalist Jim DeRogatis that was published Monday (July 17), R. Kelly has been housing half a dozen young women in his Chicago and Atlanta properties, implementing a strict set of rules to control the women’s every move: “from what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.”
The singer’s lawyer Linda Mensch almost immediately issued a statement regarding the report, stating that Kelly unequivocally denies the accusations, and has begun working to pursue his accusers and clear his name with the world. One of his victims has already spoken out as well, declaring that she’s totally fine, happy, and she’s “never been held hostage or anything of that nature.”
