Ariana Grande released yet another single to much fanfare on Friday (Jan. 18), but some people aren’t exactly bopping their heads along to “7 Rings.” Princess Nokia took to Twitter to accuse Grande of copying and appropriating her song “Mine.”
The 26-year-old rapper posted a video of herself listening to “7 Rings” and making confused facial expressions before switching to “Mine” and saying to the camera, “Hmm, do that sound familiar to you? Because that sounds really familiar to me. Oh my God. Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair? Sounds about white.” Nokia even tagged Grande in her tweet. (You can listen to both songs below.)
“Mine” was released in 2017 as part of her debut studio album 1992 Deluxe, while “7 Rings” is the second single to be released from Grande’s upcoming fifth studio album, Thank U, Next.
In addition, ABC Dallas anchor Demetria Obilor is suggesting that “7 Rings” sounds like Soulja Boy’s 2010 hit “Pretty Boy Swag.”
Billboard reached out to Grande’s reps for comment.
