Meet Phoebe Ryan. The newly L.A.-based songwriter turned solo artist has collaborated with everyone from folk duo Oh Honey to pop artist Bea Miller to rapper Skizzy Mars. And you may have heard her name bubbling under back in 2013, when she featured on Tritonal’s “Now Or Never.”
But in 2015, the songstress is eyeing a mainstream takeover all her own. The first cut? Her buzzworthy mash-up of R. Kelly’s “Ignition” and Miguel’s “Do You…,” premiering exclusively via Billboard.
On the prelude to her promising debut project, Ryan’s voice effortlessly jumps from track to track, her magnetic alto part Tove Lo, part Lights. The visual also shows off Ryan’s shimmering (and expertly alt-girl) signature teal hair, which proves the perfect contrast to the stark winter backdrop.
“It was so cold I couldn’t feel my butt when I was sitting down,” Ryan joked to Billboard on shooting the clip with director John Hoeg in Sandy Hook National Park, NJ — just 10 minutes away from Sea Bright, where she grew up. “This was the first little project I did with my producer, Kyle Shearer. He asked what kind of music I liked and this is what happened. I wanted to put it out before my original music because it’s fun and I just felt like it!”
Sip on some coke and rum and let the first taste of the Phoebe Ryan takeover warm up those late-January blues. It’s the (almost) freakin’ weekend, baby, go have some fun!
