Pharrell Williams took his talents to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night (Dec. 4), where he served as the musical guest for the evening.
Alongside a thunderous gospel choir, Pharrell performed “Letter to My Godfather,” which is an original track he made for The Black Godfather Netflix documentary highlighting music executive pioneer Clarence Avant.
With the choir rocking matching black Adidas tracksuits, Pharrell took the spotlight of center stage. The evocative performance included a heavy dose of Auto-Tune from Skateboard P, while the choir provided a heavenly backdrop for P to smoothly glide over.
Pharrell previously spoke on being able to contribute to Avant’s legacy at Netflix’s Soundcheck event presented by Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter in November. “I just feel so incredibly grateful. I couldn’t ever imagine that I would be anywhere near his story, because he doesn’t need me,” Williams said. “The people who gave me my opportunities were people that he walked into the game. You know, Teddy Riley, Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs. These were like, and still are, giants in our industry.”
