Open Mike Eagle honored the late MF DOOM with a “for DOOM” freestyle he posted Monday (Jan. 4), just four days after the shocking news of the masked rapper’s death was announced.
A Illingsworth-produced beat underlines the two-minute track that reflects on the moment he discovered “Peachfuzz” by K.M.D. in eighth grade and when he first learned of DOOM’s death. “For DOOM” also references Open Mike Eagle working with his hero on two previous collaborations, “Phantoms” and “Police Myself,” as well as the hip-hop villain’s costume and its eerie timeliness (“Fool, you’re bout to sell more masks than Dr. Fauci,” he raps).
Although he didn’t believe the terrible news at first, Open Mike Eagle raps at the very end of the freestyle that he believed a photo he kept of the notorious masked MC in his living room to actually be of DOOM. “I looked into the eyes of the piece/ He ain’t really you!” he exclaims about the doppelgänger staring back at him in the frame, which he raises up to the camera.
MF DOOM (born Daniel Dumile) died on Oct. 31, his wife announced on Thursday. He was 49 years old. The cause of death remains unknown.
Fellow rappers Tyler, the Creator, Jay Electronica, JPEGMAFIA and more mourned DOOM’s death on social media following the shocking announcement on New Year’s Eve.
